Immune system

Characteristics:

- is the body´s ability to repeal foreign substances and cells using two mechanisms : 1. non-specific defence mechanisms and 2. specific defence mechanisms

Activities of the immune system:

• defence aginst pathogens (viruses, protist, bacteria)
• removal of dead cells and tissue debris
• identification and destruction of abnormal or mutual cells (cancer cells)
• rejaction of organ transplant (foreign cells)

Inappropriateresponses:

a) allergies - abnormal response to normally harmless substances

b) autoimmune disorders - are happen when the body produces antibodies to its own substances, e.g. diabetes mellitus type I , psoriasis, lupus, AIDS
