- the smallest elements of the blood elements

- not cells

- tiny fragments of megakaryocytes that were formed in red bone marrow

- survive 5-9 days before being destroyed by the spleen and liver

- amount : about 300 x 109 platelets per l of the blood

- function : blood clotting by clumping together and forming a plug
